Have you ever been out shopping and felt intimidated by the beautiful sales girls? I've been known to shop in yoga pants and flip flops (hey, just keeping it classy here in Seattle), so I'll fess up to feeling on the frumpy side next to your typical Nordstrom gal. Turns out, many of us are intimidated by cute shop girls. Here are the deets..
Bee-Shyuan Chang over at StyleList recently reported on a new study out of the University of South Australia, which found that women between the ages of 18-26 are less likely to buy something from a sales associate who is prettier than they are.
"Retailers often think that beautiful is better," said researcher Bianca Price. "In the same way they use a celebrity to endorse a product, they hire a beautiful girl thinking that it reflects the brand and that other women will want to be like her."
Turns out, that plan backfires. "...Women may not consider celebrities a direct social threat, but they might consider the girl at their local shopping center to be one."
Interesting, huh?
Be honest, do you not go into stores or buy from attractive shop girls? Does the prettiness of a clerk intimidate you?
