Lap Band Erosion Causes Infection in Lap Band Port and Surgery is Redone After Lap Band Removal

Infection after lap band surgery, such as erosion of the lap band, can occur due to lack of precautions following surgery and the solution is removal of lap band and the process done once again, for reduction in weight.


Lap band surgery being a serious operation involves certain complications, one being erosion and it is often called as long term complication. It occurs when gastric band fastened around upper stomach erodes into stomach wall and extends into the gastric lumen. Rate of intragastric erosion of lap band vary from 0.6% to 10% and it largely depends upon the techniques used in operation, doctor’s experience and skills, precautions taken by the patient following the operation.


Habits like drinking alcohol, smoking etc lead to hyperacidity and irritation of the stomach mucosal layer which in normal cases, prevent ulcers from occurring. If this persists wall layers of stomach erodes and because of this lap band migrate into stomach.


As a result saliva and food leakage occurs from the hole or ulcer of stomach and this goes on along lap band tubing which infects the lap band port and the tissue under its skin. When such lap band infection occurs, repeated vomiting is probable to occur however it is mostly seen in severe obstruction.


There can be situations in which such an infection lap band may not be noticed, but clinical symptoms such as:

No loss in weight


Weight regain with loss of restriction in the lap band


Port site infection is indication for the problem


Followed by which radiological evaluation or endoscopy may be done for assuring the problem.


To check this problem out lap band is removed by laparoscopy or endoscopy and subsequent increase in weight is observed after it still it is done so because it arise complications. Later, lap band surgery can once again be done after a gap of about 6 months since the stomach is weak and prone to be eroded.
