First off, what is pH? It is short for potential of Hydrogen and is the system of measuring the acidity or the alkalinity of a substance. The scale has 14 levels with 7.0 as the neutral point. Anything that measures lower than neutral is acidic and has lower oxygen content and anything with a higher reading is an alkaline and with a higher oxygen content. Aside from being effective as a weight loss program, this diet has really good health benefits.
pH of the Human Body
The pH level of the human body is somewhat neutral or balanced but is slightly on the alkaline side, ranging between 7.35-7.45. Any deviation from this level means that the body is sick. The worst part is that when the potential of Hydrogen level of the body is on the acidic side, or what is known as acidosis, the body's absorption of vitamins and minerals is compromised and so is the ability to heal itself. You may be medicating well but you are not healing properly.
Bad, Bad Acid
Among the bad things that may inflict the body when it has acidosis are: cardiovascular damage, obesity, diabetes, lactic acid build up, chronic fatigue, hormonal problems, premature aging, osteoporosis, depressive tendencies, teeth and gum problems, and unhealthy hair.
Acid - Alkaline Myths
Lemons are acidic when undigested but they produce alkaline substances when inside the body. It is vice versa for meat. Testing the pH level of food before digestion is a sure way to fail in balancing your body's internal pH level. Get a chart that shows which foods are acidic forming and which are alkaline forming. The ratio of alkaline forming to acidic forming food in maintaining a balanced diet is 60% to 40%. When correcting an acidic imbalance, or when sick, the ratio is 80% to 20%.
The key, then, to good health and a sexier physique is to keep a balanced pH level, on top of a balanced diet.
